HEWLETT (Maurice). Lore Of Proserpine. Macmillan and Co., Limited, St. Martin’s Street, London, 1913. Blank before half-title; pp.[2]+[xiv]+[288]; navy blue rough coarse buckram blocked and lettered gilt on front cover and spine; fore- and lower- edges uncut. Very slight fading of spine; gilt on spine oxydised to green, that on front cover a little dull; slight foxing of early prelims.; otherwise a very nice copy.

GB £15.00

US $20.25

The second printing, dating from June 1913, one month after the first, an identical with it apart from the poorer quality of the gilt, the lack of (inserted) text-paper advertisements at the end, and the fact that the‘f’ at the end of l.15 on p.147 is not broken, whereas in the first printing it is. The mis-prints at p.88, l.9, ‘sherd’ for ‘shred’; p.125, l.16, ‘here’ for ‘hear’; and p.191, l.12, ‘to’ lacking after ‘be’, present in the first printing, remain uncorrected. An adult novel about faery lore, masquerading as a spiritual autobiography: unfortunately unfinished — though probably Hewlett felt that he could not finish it. Locke’s ‘Spectrum II’, p.61; Reginald, 07165; NCBEL, 4: 601; not in Bleiler. In this copy the following errata and typographical flaws have been noted (state or issue significance, if any, undetermined): p.88, l.9, ‘sherd’ for ‘shred’; p.125, l.16, ‘here’ for ‘hear’; p.147, l.15, broken ‘f’ at end of line; p.191, l.12, ‘to’ lacking after ‘be’.

MUNDY (Talbot [i.e., William Lancaster Gribbon]). King, Of the Khyber Rifles. By Talbot Mundy. Illustrations by J.C. Coll. London, Constable and Company Ltd., 1917. Frontispiece, and six double-spread illustrations on supercalendered paper tipped in; pp.[iv]+344; green fine rough-buckram, lettered with short rule on front cover, lettered with short rule and double-ruled box, and pictorially blocked, reddish brown on spine; t.e.light green. Light foxing to prelims., edges, and some margins; otherwise a very nice copy.

GB £55.00

US $74.25

The very scarce first English edition, published in July, 1917, the American edition having appeared in the previous year. An oriental romance set in India during World War I, Mundy’s best-known adventure novel, and the first of his books to be published in England. “As a writer of adventure fiction set in exotic climes Mundy was one of the most skilled craftsmen of his day. Like Eric Ambler he had the ability to suggest locale and alien personality types by minimal hints and suggestions. He was also a good stylist and constructor of plots. If his characters separate themselves into goods, bads, and mahatmas, this was partly due to his market.” — Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, p.376. There is no list of illustrations, but they are tipped-in between pp.32-3, 56-7, 104-5, 152-3, 200-1, and 232-3. Bleiler (1948), p.206; Bleiler (1978), p.145; Reginald 10517; Donald M. Grant, ‘Talbot Mundy, Messenger of Destiny’, p.194; Hubin, p.302.

PEASE (Howard). Border Ghost stories. Erskine Macdonald Ltd., London, W.C.1, 1919. Bertram. Nice copy.

GB £45.00

Also known in dark red buckram, ruled blind on front cover, the spine ruled, blocked, and lettered gilt identically with the present copy, and the top-edges brown. The red cloth binding looks the more expensive, and might for that reason appear to claim precedence, but given that the book was first issued during the period of stringency following the First World War when gilt was in short supply, and that many books produced in that year had a cloth-grain similar to this, it is impossible without other evidence to assign precedence. Mixed collection of Border tales, Northumbrian and Scots, including “The Warlock of Glororum,” a monstrous carnivorous plant hidden in a secret chamber. Others are traditional ghost stories. Heavy dialect pieces set variously around the Tyne, Northumberland, and the Scottish border. Bleiler, (1948), p.219, (1978), p.155, ‘Guide to Supernatural Fiction’, 1295; Wilson, ‘Shadows in the Attic’, p.407; Reginald 11264; not in Locke’s ‘Spectra’.

A very curious non-generic fantasy: sword and    .    .    . madness? — or possibly second sight. An interest in T.E. Lawrence is evident in the characterisation of the book’s absent hero. The second novel by a New Zealand born author, published when she was twenty. From the publisher’s File Library, so rubber stamped on the front end-paper.
