ROBERT TEMPLE BOOKS F & SF CATALOGUE, File M: Twentieth Century Fantasy & Science Fiction. All books first editions and first printings, except as stated.

BENSON (E.F.). Across the stream. London, John Murray, Albemarle Street, W., 1919. Integral advertisement leaf at end; pp.[vi]+314+[ii]; lime green slightly rough-textured cloth, lettered black on front cover and spine, ruled black on spine. Very slight general wear to spine; front end-papers cracked at gutter, showing tapes and muslin, back end-papers slightly cracked; light embrowning and foxing to end-papers, and some light scattered foxing passim, more or less confined to margins; piece burned from lower margin of four leaves, not approaching text; a very good copy only.

GB £220.00

US $297.00

Presentation copy, with the author’s eight word holograph inscription on the front end-paper, signed with his full name, and dated June 29, 1921. Presentation copies of Benson’s novels are uncommon, especially with his full signature. Produced under the conditions of stringency following the first world war, on poor quality paper and bound in a rather inferior cloth, this is not a title calculated to survive well. This does not explain the four burned areas, however, which are mysterious. We are inclined to ascribe them to an evil spirit! With this novel Benson returned “to the admonitory mode of his earlier work in the story of the debasement of its protagonist through the influence of a demon that haunts him in the shape of his dead brother.” — Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p.106; Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 140; Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p.68; Bleiler (1947), p.47 & (1978), p.20; Reginald 01122.

The correct first edition, English issue: the Colonial Edition, in a differently coloured cloth with grey lettering is a good deal commoner (as well, probably, as later: the second edition was in the colonial cloth). Twelve ghost stories, including some of the most famous among Benson’s work (‘The Face’, ‘"And No Bird Sings"’, ‘Naboth’s Vinyard’, ‘The Corner House’, etc.), here first collected in book form. Bleiler, Guide, 145; Bleiler (1948), p.48; (1978), p.21; Reginald, 01135; Clute & Nicholls (1993), p.109 (adding a ‘k’ to Benson’s ‘Frederic’).

According to the copyright notice “Shorter and substantially different versions of the three sections of this novel were published separately in Science Fiction Adventures copyright 1962, by Nova Publications Ltd., London. The three sections, with numerous minor alterations, were published in book form and copyright 1962, by Ace Books Inc., New York. The present completely revised and considerably expanded text is copyright 1969 and 1974, by Brunner Fact and Fiction Ltd.” According to Currey, p.74, the present edition follows the 1969 Ace text: in view of the 1974 copyright notice, however, we wonder if this is wholly true. Certainly, at any rate, it is the first hardcover edition, and the first English edition of this text.

CORELLI (Marie). The Secret power: A romance of the time. Methuen & Co. Ltd., 36 Essex Street W.C., London, 1921. Half-tone portrait frontispiece with tissue guard; pp.[iv]+332; 8pp. publisher’s inserted advertisements at end; purple rough buckram, ruled, blocked, and lettered yellow on front cover and spine; lower-edges uncut. Cloth of spine very slightly faded; some foxing of edges; faint vertical crease in front end-paper; a very nice copy nonetheless.

Lost race: a scientifically advanced civilisation discovered by means of an air-ship working on a new principle; numerous inventions including a light ray that prospects for oil and gold, a device that can cause earthquakes, etc. Locke, ‘Spectrum II’, “perhaps the most overtly science-fictional of her books".

Rationalised ghost story. The imprint is an odd one given that the author lived in London: his Foreword being signed from Holloway, London, N.7. Printed in Penrith by the publisher. Not in Locke’s ‘Spectrum’.

DE LA MARE (Walter). Henry Brocken, His travels and adventures In the rich, strange, scarce- Imaginable regions of romance. By Walter J. De La Mare ("Walter Ramal") London, John Murray, Albemarle Street, W., 1904. Cr.8vo in half-sheets; pp.x+202; light blue rough buckram, ruled and elaborately blocked gilt, ruled and lettered light blue through gilt on spine; t.e.g., fore-edges rough trimmed. Faded streak on back cover, and very slight wear to head and tail of spine; end-papers embrowned as usual; a little light pencil scoring in text (v. note); otherwise, and in general effect, a nice copy.

GB £85.00

US $114.75

From the library of the artist and critic William Rothenstein, with his wood-engraved bookplate on the front paste-down. The pencil scoring in the text is presumably his. Rothenstein was to make several portraits of de la Mare. Gwendolen Murphy’s first issue, first state of text (Bibliography in ‘The London Mercury’ Vol.XV, 1927), the bracket after ‘Walter Ramal’ on the title-page being present, and the top-edges gilt. Later states of text have the bracket absent and the third issue has the top-edges plain. Clute & Grant, ‘Encyclopedia of Fantasy’, p.261; Bleiler, 1978, p.59; Reginald, 04029.

A classic horror story of psychic possession in which a man sleeps in the tomb of an eighteenth century pirate, awakening to find that his face has become entirely different, and bears an uncanny resemblance to a wood-cut portrait of the man.... Loosely laid in are proof pulls of the printed portions of the dust-wrapper, on art paper. The pull of the front panel and spine (in full colour) has been folded in half vertically to allow it to be slipped into the book. The text for the flaps is included as two separate slips. Also laid in is an illustrated advertisement for the volume (and three others) clipped from an American newspaper (this lightly embrowned). The book itself is presumably an advance copy. Currey, p.144. We cannot remember seeing any other volume in which the names of the Editor and the Consulting Editor shared the title-page imprint with that of the publisher! An odd — and somewhat crowded — title-page.

Signed by S.H. Sime on the frontispiece, and by Dunsany at the end of the Preface. One of an edition limited to 500 numbered copies, printed on Abbey Mills Greenfield hand-made paper. First edition, English issue, the wrappers bearing the price label ‘2/6d.’ over the original 35c on the front cover (still just visible due to bad positioning of the label). The first edition of the author’s second book. The English importation of first edition sheets appears to have been rather small, and this issue is scarce — especially in such nice state. There was no hard-cover issue of this first edition, either in England or the U.S.A. Not in Locke’s ‘Spectrum’; Hubin, p.185, erroneously dating the publication a year later, and giving the Ballantine reference number as ‘507 K’ instead of the earlier ‘391 K’, which is on the cover of this copy. The advertisements run only to ‘319 K’. Hubin does not mention an English issue.
