IMPORTANT!

The simplest way to order from this catalogue is to click on the green button beneath the book of your choice. This will create an e-mail containing all the information we need to process your order
EXCEPT that we need also to know the address for delivery. (The reason for asking that at this time is that we will send you an e-invoice for the item inclusive of postage calculated according to the country to which the parcel is to be sent.) Books will be billed at the cheapest postal rate available, unless you ask us to do something else. If delivery is to be outside Europe, and you do not want the book sent by surface mail, you should specify air-mail.

EVERSON (William, Brother Antoninus). The residual Years: Poems 1934-1948. The Pre-Catholic Poetry of Brother Antoninus. With an Introduction by Kenneth Rexroth. A New Directions Book, 1968. Double short demy 16mo; pp.[xviii]+238; glazed white card wrappers printed in black, cut flush. Fine copy.

GB £10.00

US $12.40

First complete collected edition. The title was first used ‘to designate a slight, mimeographed sheaf of poems William Everson issued from his conscientious objector’s camp in 1944. It subsequently became the title of the cumulative edition of the poet’s work which New Directions offered in 1948. The present volume not only re-issues that one, but completes it by including all the early work not contained therein, and by rounding out the poet’s production of 1946, 1947 and 1948, heretofore published only in limited editions.’ — publisher’s note. Everson became a Roman Catholic in 1949, and entered the Dominican order in 1951, after which he published under his new name, Brother Antoninus. Rexroth’s Introduction, which occupies pp.xv-xvii, is here first published.

The first issue, with the head and shoulders portrait of Galsworthy as frontispiece, not the three-quarter length portrait which is on the dust-wrapper, and which was used instead on copies issued later: one of 2,600 copies thus of a total printing of 5,800. Marrot, pp.92-3, describing the cloth colour as ‘royal blue’. To our eyes it is a little lighter. The present copy bears a neat pencilled inscription on the verso of the front free end-paper recording the purchase of this copy in December 1926, and the publication price as 3/6d. (The dust-wrapper, though complete, bears no price: nor does Marrot record one.)

Norah Smallwood’s copy, with her pencilled signature and two page references on the front end-paper. The page references refer to pages where there are erasures of pencilled notes evidenced by traces of India-rubber on the leaves: those on p.105 have been almost wholly erased, but those on p.130 are still legible. They involve the addition to the end of the stage direction at l.17 the words “Then pensively says” and the revision of l.19 from “Even poor old Lord Nelson!” to “Even the poor old Duke of Cambridge!” Whether these alterations were in fact made in the published text, we do not know. The book, with the covers unlettered, is evidently a trial copy of some kind, and probably unique. Norah Smallwood was a director of Chatto & Windus.
